VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City has recorded its first case of monkeypox, a global public health emergency that has so far affected tens of thousands of people in over 70 countries worldwide, Tang Chi Thuong, director of the city's Department of Health, reported at a meeting on October 3.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 2 adopted a resolution on the organisation of a “High-level meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response”.

The Ministry of Health has asked localities nationwide to monitor foreign arrivals from countries with monkeypox as an early response after infections were spotted in the region.

Ho Chi Minh City has proposed the Ministry of Health permit it to impose health declaration on arrivals in local ports of entry to early detect suspected cases of monkeypox.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) will continue to share information with Vietnam on developments of monkeypox and support the country in the prevention and control of the disease, Dr. Socorro Escalante, Acting WHO Representative in Vietnam told the media on July 26.

Although no cases of monkeypox had been recorded in Vietnam as of July 24, the risk of this disease entering the country is very high, according to experts.
