Vietnam–China literary translation contest Season 2 launched
VOV.VN - The second Vietnam–China, China–Vietnam Literary Translation Contest has been launched, aiming to further promote cultural exchange and nurture a new generation of translators between the two countries.
The contest is jointly organised by Chibooks, the Chinese Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, Beijing Foreign Studies University, the China Writers Association, the Ho Chi Minh City Writers’ Association, and the Chinese Literature Reading Club in Vietnam. It forms part of the “Vietnam–China Literary Exchange 2026” programme marking the 76th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China.
Following the success of its inaugural edition in 2025, which attracted over 2,000 participants from both countries, this year’s contest adopts a more specialised approach. Participation is limited to students majoring in Chinese language in Vietnam and Vietnamese language in China, with categories for high school students and freelance translators removed to enhance academic quality.
Contestants will compete in two rounds, focusing on poetry and prose translation. Selected works include poems by renowned Vietnamese poets such as Nguyen Binh, Xuan Dieu, Han Mac Tu, and Bang Viet, alongside prose by Nguyen Nhat Anh, Nguyen Huy Thiep, and Ho Anh Thai, as well as works by contemporary Chinese authors.
Nguyen Le Chi, vice chairwoman of the Translation Literature Council under the Ho Chi Minh City Writers’ Association and director of Chibooks, said the contest is expected to deepen mutual understanding of literature, culture, and people between Vietnam and China, while inspiring a passion for foreign languages among students.
She noted that the competition will serve as a platform to foster young translation talent and is expected to be held annually in the coming years.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in September 2026 in both Vietnam and China, in a hybrid format combining in-person and online events.
