Chinese Ambassador: Leader To Lam’s visit marks new milestone in China-Vietnam ties

VOV.VN - The recent state visit to China by Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam has held special significance and marked a new milestone in bilateral relations, reflecting deepening political trust and opening new prospects for multifaceted cooperation, Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam He Wei.

Speaking at a press briefing in Hanoi on April 21, He described the visit as a historically significant event, reflecting increasingly strong political ties and mutual trust between the two Parties and States. He noted that the visit took place as both countries are advancing new strategic development orientations, helping to further consolidate the foundation of bilateral relations in the coming period.

The Ambassador highlighted that one of the key outcomes of the visit was the continued maintenance of high-level exchanges, demonstrating a trend toward deeper and more stable political relations. The reciprocal visits by top leaders at a meaningful time underscore the strategic priority both sides place on bilateral ties.

He also emphasised the substantive results of the visit, noting that the two sides signed 32 cooperation agreements across multiple sectors. These agreements are expected to create new momentum for bilateral cooperation, bring tangible benefits to both countries, and contribute to regional peace and stability.

In terms of economic and trade cooperation, the Ambassador said bilateral ties continue to maintain strong growth. China is Vietnam’s largest trading partner, while Vietnam is among China’s leading trade partners within ASEAN. Two-way trade turnover reached nearly US$$300 billion in 2025, reflecting the deepening interconnection between the two economies.

China was Vietnam’s second-largest source of FDI in 2025, with cooperation shifting from scale to quality. Both sides are prioritising infrastructure connectivity, cross-border railways, and supply chain efficiency, while expanding collaboration in energy, clean minerals, and technology.

A key priority is the development of three standard-gauge railway lines in northern Vietnam, forming the backbone of a cross-border rail network and an integrated multimodal transport system, he said.

At the same time, both sides are working to develop “smart border gates” to reduce customs clearance time and enhance supply chain efficiency. They are promoting exchanges and trade in strategic sectors such as clean minerals and energy connectivity, while facilitating greater investment flows by enterprises and fostering a fair and transparent business environment.

Economic and tech cooperation is expected to see strong growth and new breakthroughs ahead, helping to enhance economic connectivity and support sustainable development, he remarked.

Another highlight noted by the Ambassador is people-to-people exchange and tourism cooperation. The joint launch of the “China–Vietnam Tourism Cooperation Year 2026” by the two leaders is set to build on previous successes in cultural and people exchanges, enhance mutual understanding, and further strengthen bilateral ties.

According to the diplomat, youth, education, and cultural exchange programmes in recent years have generated meaningful connections, demonstrating the depth of the long-standing friendship between Vietnam and China. Building on this foundation, both countries are expected to further expand cooperation across economic and social dimensions, moving toward a more substantive “community with a shared future,” he said.
