Vietnamese arrivals to Thailand see sharp decline in 2025
VOV.VN - The number of Vietnamese tourists traveling to Thailand in 2025 has recorded a rare and significant decline, according to preliminary statistics from Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS).
Vietnamese arrivals to Thailand in 2025 are estimated at just over 600,000, down around 33% from nearly one million visitors recorded in 2024.
In 2024, Thailand enjoyed a strong summer season, with several months recording more than 100,000 Vietnamese visitors. In 2025, peak periods largely disappeared, replaced by a prolonged downturn lasting from the beginning of the year through November.
January was one of the few bright spots, with 64,094 arrivals, up nearly 16% year on year. From February onward, however, visitor numbers declined steadily, down 7.44% in February, 18.97% in March, and 25.02% in April, before entering a sharper contraction phase from May.
The summer months, traditionally the peak season for this market, saw the steepest declines. While May to August 2024 recorded 100,000–116,000 visitors per month, the same period in 2025 saw only around 50,000–59,000 visitors monthly, representing a drop of nearly 50%.
August marked the lowest point of the peak season, with arrivals down by more than 50% year on year. Visitor numbers then fell further to 37,973 in September, before edging up slightly in October and November (46,030 and 48,067 arrivals, respectively).
Despite this modest rebound, arrivals during these months remained 30–43% lower than a year earlier, indicating that the market has yet to show a clear recovery.
Notably, the slowdown is not limited to the Vietnamese market. Overall international arrivals to Thailand have also softened, with total foreign visitor numbers reaching an estimated 29.6 million by the end of November, down 7% year on year.
Within Southeast Asia, Vietnam currently ranks as Thailand’s sixth largest source market, following Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines.
