Vietnam Airlines marks milestone with first direct air route to Northern Europe
VOV.VN - Vietnam Airlines has officially launched a direct route between Ho Chi Minh City and Copenhagen, marking Vietnam’s first nonstop air link to Northern Europe.
The service represents a key step in the flag carrier’s Europe network expansion strategy for 2025-2030, aimed at meeting growing demand for tourism, business travel, trade and family visits between the two regions.
The inaugural flight, VN39, departed Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 10:45 p.m. on December 15 aboard a wide-body Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and landed safely at Copenhagen Airport after more than 12 hours in the air, carrying over 200 passengers to the Danish capital.
In the opposite direction, flight VN38 took off from Copenhagen at 10:50 a.m. local time on December 16 and arrived in Ho Chi Minh City later the same day, serving more than 300 passengers.
The Ho Chi Minh City-Copenhagen route will operate three times a week. Flights depart Ho Chi Minh City on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, while return services leave Copenhagen on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.
The new route offers more convenient connectivity for travelers from Vietnam to Denmark and the wider Nordic region, while also catering to rising travel demand from the Vietnamese community there, estimated at around 70,000 people. It is also expected to further boost the number of Nordic visitors to Vietnam, which has been increasing in recent years.
Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines Dang Anh Tuan said Copenhagen is a priority market in the carrier’s European expansion strategy. The direct service significantly shortens travel time between Vietnam and Denmark, enhances Vietnam Airlines’ competitive position, and opens up new opportunities for tourism, trade and people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and Northern Europe.
“This direct connection will bring practical benefits to passengers, businesses and the Vietnamese community in the region,” Tuan stressed.
Copenhagen is seen as a high-potential market, particularly during the winter season, when Nordic travelers show strong interest in warm-weather destinations such as Vietnam.
With the launch of the route, Vietnam Airlines becomes one of the few Southeast Asian carriers offering direct flights to Northern Europe, adding another strategic destination to its European network, which already includes Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, London, Milan and Moscow.
The Ho Chi Minh City-Copenhagen service also marks a notable milestone in Vietnam Airlines’ 30-year development journey, underscoring its commitment to expanding intercontinental connectivity, strengthening the role of the national carrier, and promoting Vietnam’s image, culture and people worldwide.
