Vietnam Airlines launches direct flight between Hanoi and Jakarta
VOV.VN - Vietnam Airlines on November 22 inaugurated a direct flight connecting Jakarta (Indonesia) and Hanoi (Vietnam), coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Indonesia (December 30, 1955 – 2025).
The launch marks a significant step forward not only in aviation and tourism but also in strengthening bilateral relations amid growing cooperation in trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
Flight VN634, carrying 130 passengers, departed from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta at 1:30 a.m. on November 23, arriving directly in Hanoi.
This is the second direct route between Indonesia and Vietnam introduced by Vietnam Airlines this year, following the Denpasar – Ho Chi Minh City connection, underscoring the airline’s long-term commitment to expanding its presence in the Indonesian market.
Tran Tuan Nghia, head of Vietnam Airlines’ Representative Office in Indonesia, emphasised the strategic importance of Indonesia as a key destination in Southeast Asia.
“This new direct flight strengthens connectivity and reaffirms our commitment to bringing people from both countries closer together,” he said.
The launch is expected to boost economic, trade, tourism, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges.
“The new direct route connecting the two capitals will facilitate Indonesian travelers visiting Vietnam and supports Vietnam’s tourism goal of welcoming over 20 million international visitors this year. It will contribute significantly to the broader development of Vietnam’s tourism industry,” Nghia added.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia Ta Van Thong highlighted that the timing of the route’s inauguration on the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties reflects a deepening partnership and mutual trust between the two countries.
“Economic, trade, and people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and Indonesia have yet to fully reflect the potential of our two countries. The new capital-to-capital flight will promote interactions between our citizens and create favourable conditions for businesses, opening opportunities to tap into one of the region’s most promising markets,” stated the diplomat.
According to Vietnam Airlines, the Hanoi – Jakarta route will initially operate five flights per week, with potential increases during peak periods. The new direct connection not only enhances travel between the two capitals but also supports ASEAN’s vision of stronger regional integration and cooperation.
