Vietnam edge India 2-1 in tough opener at AFC Women’s Asian Cup
VOV.VN - Vietnam secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over India in their Group C stage opener at the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup on March 4, making a positive start to their continental campaign.
Despite being considered favourites, the side coached by Mai Duc Chung faced a stern challenge before claiming all three points.
Vietnam controlled possession early and created the first clear opportunity in the 14th minute, when Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy struck the crossbar with a powerful long-range effort after strong buildup play. Sustained pressure eventually paid off in the 31st minute as Ngan Thi Van Su opened the scoring with a precise curling finish into the far corner.
The second half brought added drama. A potential second goal for Vietnam was ruled out following a VAR review for handball. Moments later, India capitalised on a defensive lapse, with Sanfida Nongrum breaking through to level the score at 1-1.
The equaliser shifted momentum, and Vietnam struggled to regain control for much of the next 20 minutes. However, just as the match appeared destined for a draw, Vietnam found a decisive breakthrough in stoppage time. A long pass from Huynh Nhu released Vu Thi Hoa down the flank, who squared the ball across goal for Van Su to calmly slot home her second of the night.
The late winner sealed a crucial 2-1 victory, giving Vietnam a strong start in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and valuable momentum for the remainder of the group stage.
Following the match, the official account of the Asian Football Confederation posted a message in Vietnamese celebrating Van Su’s performance. Indian media outlets, including India Today and Outlook India, acknowledged Vietnam’s composure and attacking sharpness, noting that the late goal ultimately decided the contest.
