AFC includes Vietnam in Women’s Asian Cup ‘Epic Moments’ fan vote
VOV.VN - The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has included Vietnam’s historic qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in its AFC Women’s Asian Cup™ “Epic Moments” campaign, a fan vote highlighting nine landmark achievements in the tournament’s history.
The regional football governing body launched the online poll on February 14 as part of its build-up to the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia. Voting is scheduled to close on February 20.
The 2022 tournament, held in India, also served as Asia’s qualifying competition for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. After reaching the quarter-finals, Vietnam entered the intercontinental play-off stage to compete for Asia’s final World Cup berth alongside Thailand and Chinese Taipei.
Vietnam secured a 2-0 victory over Thailand before defeating Chinese Taipei 2-1 to clinch their first-ever ticket to the Women’s World Cup. Goals from Huynh Nhu and Thai Thi Thao against Thailand, followed by strikes from Chuong Thi Kieu and Bich Thuy against Chinese Taipei, sealed the landmark achievement. In a 35-second video accompanying the poll, the AFC replayed those decisive goals.
The AFC described Vietnam’s accomplishment as overcoming adversity under immense pressure, underlining the significance of the team’s resilience during a challenging campaign.
Vietnam’s milestone is listed alongside eight other notable moments in the tournament’s history, including the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea ending China’s dominance in 2001, Australia lifting their first title in 2010, Thailand making history in 2014, Japan completing their collection of major titles in 2014, Japan defending their crown in 2018, China’s resurgence in 2022, the Republic of Korea reaching their first final in 2022, and the Philippines continuing their rapid progress in 2022.
The online poll will close on February 20, just over a week before the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup kicks off in Australia.
At the 2026 tournament, Vietnam have been drawn in Group C alongside Japan, India and Chinese Taipei. They will open their campaign against India on March 4.
