Women team depart for 2026 AFC Asian Cup, eye World Cup spot
VOV.VN - Coach Mai Duc Chung and his players departed Hanoi on February 27 for Australia to compete in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, aiming to secure a second berth at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
According to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), the team flew from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City before taking a connecting flight to Perth, departing at 0:55 a.m. on February 28. They are scheduled to arrive in Perth at 8:50 a.m. (local time).
The players have been in training since January 15 in preparation for the continental tournament. As part of their build-up, the team held a training camp in China from February 7 to 14, playing two friendly matches against the Chinese women’s national team. The fixtures provided valuable opportunities to assess personnel, test tactical options and enhance cohesion.
After more than a month of intensive preparation covering fitness, tactics and team coordination, head coach Mai Duc Chung and his players said they are fully ready for their first major tournament of 2026.
Arriving early in Australia will allow the team additional time to adapt to local weather conditions and training facilities, and to finalise preparations before the competition officially kicks off.
Speaking to the media ahead of departure, head coach Mai Duc Chung expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness.
“I am very pleased that the players have responded well to the training programme over the past month,” he said. “I am also happy that several key players have recovered from injuries and returned to full training and competition.
“There is nothing more reassuring than seeing the players regain their health and form. I can affirm that the team are 100% ready in terms of both spirit and physical condition for the upcoming tournament. The coaching staff have also finalised the starting lineup for the Asian Cup 2026.”
With careful preparation and strong team spirit, the Vietnam women’s team carry high expectations from supporters at home. The coaching staff emphasised that beyond competing with maximum effort, the ultimate objective is to achieve positive results and move closer to the dream of returning to the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
At the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, Vietnam have been drawn into Group C alongside Japan, India and Chinese Taipei. The tournament will take place from March 1 to 21 in Sydney, Perth and the Gold Coast, with the top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed sides advancing to the quarter-finals.
Vietnam will play their group-stage matches in Perth, facing India on March 4, Chinese Taipei on March 7 and Japan on March 10 at Perth Rectangular Stadium.
