Ly Hoang Nam wins PPA Tour Asia Hanoi Cup 2026 after straight-sets victory
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s top player Ly Hoang Nam secured the men’s singles title at the PPA Tour Asia – Hanoi Cup 2026 after a convincing straight-sets victory over compatriot Truong Vinh Hien in the final on April 5.
The match, held at the My Dinh Athletics Palace in Hanoi, ended 2-0 (11-5, 11-6) in favour of Hoang Nam, who once again demonstrated his experience and composure under pressure.
Vinh Hien made a confident start, taking an early 5-2 lead in both sets with agile movement and sharp shot placement. However, Hoang Nam quickly regained control thanks to his solid technique and powerful backhand drives, leveling the momentum.
In the decisive phase of the first set, Hoang Nam stepped up his attacking intensity, forcing his opponent onto the defensive before closing it out 11-5. A similar pattern unfolded in the second set, where despite trailing early, Hoang Nam produced a strong scoring run to seal the set 11-6 and clinch the match.
After match point, Hoang Nam dropped to the court in an emotional celebration, a familiar gesture seen in many of his previous victories.
The Hanoi title marks his second men’s singles championship on the PPA Asia Tour, further cementing his status as one of the region’s leading pickleball players. The 1997-born athlete previously won a tour event in Hangzhou, China, in late 2025.
His path to the title was far from easy. In the round of 16, Hoang Nam overcame Christian Alshon (USA) in a three-set battle before defeating Dylan Frazier (USA) in straight sets in the semifinals.
On the other side of the draw, Vinh Hien also impressed throughout the tournament. The 2004-born player defeated Mitchell Hargreaves (Australia) in the quarterfinals and caused a major upset by eliminating world No. 2 Federico Staksrud (Argentina) in the semifinals.
The presence of two Vietnamese players in the final of a PPA Asia 1000-level event marks a significant milestone, highlighting the rapid growth of pickleball in Vietnam in recent years.
