Ly Hoang Nam wins PPA Tour Asia men’s singles title
VOV.VN - Vietnamese pickleball player Ly Hoang Nam clinched his first men’s pro singles title on the PPA Tour Asia after defeating Wong Hong-kit (Hong Kong – China) convincing fashion at the Hangzhou Open 2025 in China on December 6.
Nam dominated the final, winning 11–4, 11–4 to secure his maiden PPA Asia title after multiple runner-up finishes in previous tournaments.
The Vietnamese player showed solid composure and control early on, overwhelming Wong in the first game before racing to a 9–1 lead in the second. Wong managed to add three more points, but could not turn the match around as Nam calmly closed out the win.
After the match, Nam congratulated Wong on a great season, and added that he was satisfied with his own performance in the final. He also revealed plans to travel to the United States to gain more experience and elevate his level.
A day earlier, Nam produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by defeating world No. 2 Federico Staksrud, also the top seed at PPA Asia, 2-0 in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, Vietnam’s Truong Vinh Hien lost to Wong 0-2.
Before December 6’s final, Nam had been the only member of Vietnam’s current “Big Four” in men’s pickleball, alongside Trinh Linh Giang, Truong Vinh Hien and Phuc Huynh who had never won a PPA Tour title.
A former Vietnamese No. 1 in tennis, Nam took up pickleball later than his domestic rivals but has quickly caught up, reaching the later stages of several PPA events this season.
The PPA Asia Tour Hangzhou Open 2025 took place from December 3–6 at the Liping Sport Center with 372 players competing. It was the final stop on the Asian circuit and served as preparation for the 2026 season, attracting several world-class athletes including former world No. 1 Staksrud and Connor Garnett.
The tournament offered US$50,000 in prize money and ranking points for both the PPA and Asia Tour. Victories over top-ranked PPA players provide major opportunities for Vietnamese athletes to improve their international standings.
