Vietnamese community in Algeria welcomes Lunar New Year 2026
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese Embassy in Algeria on February 9 hosted a Homeland Spring 2026 celebration, bringing together around 180 guests from the Vietnamese community and Algerian partners to welcome the Lunar New Year (Tet) 2026.
Participants included representatives of Vietnamese families spanning several generations living and working in Algeria, officials from Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and local authorities, representatives of local organisations, martial arts associations and media outlets, as well as embassy staff and their families.
Although the Vietnamese community in Algeria is relatively small, many Vietnamese nationals travelled long distances to attend the event, including families from provinces located 400–500 kilometres from the capital, such as Oran and Annaba, reflecting their strong attachment to Vietnam and traditional cultural values.
In his remarks, Ambassador Tran Quoc Khanh highlighted the significance of the Tet holiday for Vietnamese people at home and abroad, while reviewing Vietnam’s recent socio-economic achievements and new developments in Vietnam–Algeria relations.
The ambassador noted that 2025 marked a strong year for Vietnam’s economy, with GDP growth exceeding 8% and total import-export turnover reaching US$920 billion, up 16% year on year. Bilaterally, trade between Vietnam and Algeria reached US$550 million in 2025, with growing interest from Vietnamese businesses in the Algerian market.
He also underscored that 2025 saw the signing of several important strategic cooperation agreements during the official visit of the Vietnamese Prime Minister to Algeria, further strengthening bilateral ties.
The Ambassador reaffirmed that the Vietnamese and Vietnamese-origin community in Algeria remains an inseparable part of the Vietnamese nation.
Preserving the Vietnamese language, cuisine and cultural traditions, while respecting Algerian laws and promoting solidarity, contributes to showcasing Vietnamese cultural values and nurturing the long-standing friendship between the two countries, he said.
Many participants expressed their joy and emotion at taking part in the Homeland Spring celebration, noting that despite the geographical distance, the friendship and mutual affection between the Vietnamese and Algerian people remain sincere and warm.
The event offered an opportunity for overseas Vietnamese of different generations, along with Algerian friends, to experience the atmosphere and flavours of traditional Vietnamese Tet. Guests were treated to a selection of traditional Vietnamese dishes, and many expressed admiration for Vietnam’s recent economic achievements, as well as keen interest in Vietnamese New Year customs and cuisine.
