Government supports plan to establish centrally-run Dong Nai city
VOV.VN - The government of Vietnam has approved a proposal to establish Dong Nai city and create 10 new wards in present Dong Nai province, according to a resolution issued on April 6.
Under Resolution No. 95/NQ-CP, the government endorsed the dossier prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which outlines administrative restructuring measures including the formation of new wards and the establishment of a city-level administrative unit.
The government has tasked the Ministry of Home Affairs with finalising the proposal by incorporating feedback from cabinet members and relevant agencies before submitting it to the National Assembly and its Standing Committee for consideration.
Earlier, on April 3, an appraisal council led by Interior Minister Do Thanh Binh conducted an assessment of the proposal in Dong Nai province. All eight members of the council voted in favour of the plan.
Dong Nai, a province in Vietnam’s Southeastern region, located within the key economic triangle of Ho Chi Minh City – Binh Duong – Dong Nai, is rapidly emerging as a strategic centre for industry, logistics, and services.
Covering more than 12,700 km² – the 9th largest in the country – and home to nearly 4.5 million people, Dong Nai is now among the most populous provinces in Vietnam, ranking 5th nationally. Its urbanisation rate has reached nearly 57%, exceeding the benchmark required for upgrading to a centrally-administered city.
Located close to Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s economic hub, Dong Nai serves as a key link connecting southern, central, and Central Highlands regions, supported by well-developed road, port, and aviation networks.
Long Thanh International Airport, one of Vietnam’s largest infrastructure projects, is under construction in Dong Nai and is expected to begin initial operations in 2026. The airport is projected to drive strong economic, service, and logistics growth for the province and the wider region.
Today, Dong Nai functions as a major industrial and logistics hub with numerous industrial parks, transport centres, and multimodal connections, positioning it as a new growth pole among Vietnam’s key urban areas.
The Party Central Committee has approved a plan to establish Dong Nai as a centrally-administered city, instructing authorities to finalise the proposal and submit it to the National Assembly for approval in the near future.
