Vietnam and Cambodia reaffirm close ties at New Year gathering in Phnom Penh

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia hosted a gathering in Phnom Penh on April 2 with the Standing Committee of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) Central Committee, marking the traditional Chol Chhnam Thmey New Year and the success of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Among senior Cambodian leaders in attendance were CPP Vice President Sar Kheng; CPP Vice President and Permanent Member of the Standing Committee Say Chhum; President of the National Assembly Khuon Sudary; along with other members of the CPP’s Standing Committee and Central Committee.

Addressing the function, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Nguyen Minh Vu congratulated Cambodia on its significant achievements under the leadership of the CPP, led by Hun Sen, and the Cambodian Government, noting that these accomplishments have not only benefited the Cambodian people but also contributed to building the ASEAN Community and maintaining peace, stability and development in the region.

He highlighted that relations between the two Parties, States and peoples of Vietnam and Cambodia continue to be strengthened and expanded across all fields. In particular, the state visit to Cambodia by General Secretary To Lam and the high-level Vietnamese delegation, as well as the high-level meeting between the two Parties and the trilateral Party meeting of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia held in Phnom Penh on February 6, 2026, laid an important foundation for further cooperation.

Sharing in the festive spirit of the Cambodian New Year, the ambassador noted that Vietnam successfully organised the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam earlier this year, as well as elections for the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term in March. These major political events, he said, mark a new development phase for Vietnam, with aspirations for a prosperous and modern nation.

On the occasion of Chol Chhnam Thmey, Vu extended his New Year wishes to the Cambodian people for prosperity and continued success in national development.

On behalf of the CPP Standing Committee, Sar Kheng expressed appreciation for the embassy’s organization of the gathering, which celebrated both Cambodia’s New Year and Vietnam’s recent political achievements. He also extended congratulations on Vietnam’s successful Party Congress and National Assembly elections, and expressed confidence that Vietnam would achieve its goal of becoming a high-income developed country by 2045 while continuing to play an active role regionally and globally.

Sar Kheng commended the growing cooperation between the two countries, underscoring the important contributions of the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia. He reaffirmed that the relationship between Cambodia and Vietnam continues to be strengthened under the motto of “good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainability,” bringing tangible benefits to both peoples.

He also stressed that Cambodia places high priority on maintaining and promoting the traditional solidarity and mutual support between the two countries. He thanked Vietnam for its assistance in helping Cambodia overthrow the genocidal Pol Pot regime.

Looking ahead to 2027, which marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia, Sar Kheng said both sides would coordinate to organise a range of activities to commemorate the milestone.

The gathering took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere, featuring traditional music performances from both Vietnam and Cambodia by artists from Ho Chi Minh City.
