Defence cooperation remains pillar of Vietnam-Cambodia ties
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Defence Minister Gen. Phan Van Giang met Gen. Prum Din, State Secretary of Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, in Hanoi on March 9, highlighting defence cooperation as a key pillar of bilateral relations.
Giang, who is also a Politburo member and Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, hailing the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia.
He expressed confidence that under the leadership of the Cambodian People’s Party, headed by Hun Sen, and the Government led by Prime Minister Hun Manet, Cambodia will achieve further development in the coming period.
Giang noted that Party General Secretary To Lam’s visits to Laos and Cambodia in early February 2026 carried political significance, reflecting Vietnam’s consistent policy of attaching special importance and top priority to relations with Laos and Cambodia.
He said defence cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia has continued to be strengthened in recent years and has been recognised by senior leaders of both countries as one of the key pillars of bilateral relations.
Giang spoke highly of recent cooperation outcomes, including exchanges of delegations at various levels, particularly high-level visits; the maintenance of dialogue and consultation mechanisms; information sharing; training activities; border management and protection; exchanges and twinning activities; education and communication on the relationship between the two countries; the search and repatriation of soldiers’ remains; and coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums.
Regarding cooperation priorities for 2026, Giang proposed that both sides continue coordinating in carrying out agreed activities, including maintaining exchanges of delegations and cooperation mechanisms, providing training for personnel, boosting coordination in border management and protection, and combating transnational crime, particularly online fraud networks.
He also invited senior leaders of the Cambodian Ministry of National Defence, the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, and Cambodian defence enterprises to attend and display products at the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026.
For his part, Gen. Prum Din thanked the Party, State, army and people of Vietnam for their support in helping overthrow the Pol Pot genocidal regime and revive Cambodia.
He expressed hope that both sides will continue implementing agreed defence cooperation activities, thereby contributing to stronger relations between the two militaries and the two countries.
