Parliamentary cooperation a key pillar of Vietnam–Cambodia ties

VOV.VN - Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary in Phnom Penh on February 6, focusing on measures to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and promote more substantive and effective coordination between the two countries’ legislatures.

Chairman Man said cooperation between the two legislatures has continued to develop positively, contributing to reinforcing political trust and supporting the overall Vietnam–Cambodia relationship. He noted that regular exchanges of parliamentary delegations and friendship parliamentarian groups have helped enhance mutual understanding and practical cooperation.

He praised Cambodia’s socio-economic achievements in recent years and reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of attaching importance to its relationship with Cambodia, considering the bilateral ties a valuable asset nurtured by the two parties, states and peoples.

For her part, President Khuon Sudary congratulated Vietnam on the success of the recent 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and expressed confidence in Vietnam’s continued development in the coming years.

She welcomed the steady expansion of cooperation between the two legislatures and said Cambodia values exchanges of experience with Vietnam in lawmaking, supervision and decision-making on major national issues.

Both sides agreed to maintain regular high-level and working-level exchanges between the two National Assemblies, strengthen coordination among parliamentary committees, and further promote the role of friendship parliamentarian groups.

They also agreed to enhance cooperation in overseeing the implementation of bilateral agreements and treaties, and to facilitate closer coordination between ministries, sectors and localities of the two countries.

The two leaders stressed the importance of promoting people-to-people exchanges through parliamentary channels, particularly among young parliamentarians, women parliamentarians and friendship associations, as well as strengthening cooperation between border localities.

They agreed to coordinate activities marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia in 2027, viewing the milestone as an opportunity to further deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Chairman Man thanked the Cambodian side for its continued support for the Vietnamese community in Cambodia and expressed hope that favourable conditions would continue to be created for people of Vietnamese origin to live, work and contribute positively to Cambodia’s socio-economic development and to bilateral relations.

President Khuon Sudary shared the view that the two National Assemblies should continue to coordinate closely at regional and international parliamentary forums and support each other’s candidacies, contributing to peace, stability and cooperation in the region and beyond.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man was accompanying General Secretary To Lam on a state visit to Cambodia, where he attended a high-level meeting between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Cambodian People’s Party, as well as a trilateral meeting among the leaders of the ruling parties of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
