Hanoi hosts APEC 2027 capacity building workshop with international partners
VOV.VN - Vietnam is accelerating preparations for its role as host of APEC 2027, as officials and international partners gathered in Hanoi for a two-day capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening coordination and implementation.
The event, held on April 15-16, was jointly organised by Vietnam’s APEC 2027 National Secretariat under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the US Department of State, bringing together APEC Secretariat representatives, experts from the United States, New Zealand, Peru, Chile and nearly 100 Vietnamese officials and researchers.
At the opening session, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Hang, head of the APEC 2027 Secretariat, said over nearly four decades of development, APEC has established itself as the leading economic forum in the Asia-Pacific, making important contributions to peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
Against a backdrop of deepening global and regional uncertainty, she noted that APEC continues to serve as a key platform for dialogue, cooperation and consensus-building among member economies, demonstrating strong adaptability to emerging development trends and shifting global dynamics.
According to the diplomat, Vietnam’s third time hosting APEC comes as the country enters a new strategic development phase focused on high growth and a more productivity-driven economic model.
She stressed that APEC is a key pillar of Vietnam’s foreign policy of international integration, adding that Vietnam is committed to working closely with member economies to ensure the success of APEC 2027 that helps shape the forum’s future direction.
John W. McIntyre, Chargé d’affaires of the US Embassy in Hanoi, described Vietnam as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific and highlighted its growing role in APEC and global affairs. He noted that Vietnam’s successful hosting of APEC in 2006 and 2017 demonstrated its organisational capacity and said Washington stands ready to support preparations for 2027 through training programmes and expert exchanges.
Over the two-day workshop, participants are discussing APEC priorities, governance practices and negotiation skills, including agenda-setting, document drafting and consensus-building among member economies.
The discussions are expected to contribute to Vietnam’s priority-setting for APEC 2027, with a focus on delivering practical outcomes and long-term value for the region.
Vietnam is working with international partners, including the United States and the APEC Secretariat, to roll out further capacity-building activities ahead of its 2027 hosting year.
