Sun Group, SITA to digitalise aviation infrastructure for APEC 2027
VOV.VN - Sun Group, one of Vietnam's leading tourism developers, and SITA, the world's leading specialist in air transport communications and information technology have signed a strategic agreement to accelerate the digital transformation of Vietnam’s aviation infrastructure, with a focus on serving the APEC 2027.
Under the deal, the two sides will deploy advanced aviation technologies across Sun Group’s ecosystem, including Phu Quoc International Airport, Van Don International Airport and Sun PhuQuoc Airways, aiming to digitalise passenger processes, optimise operations and build an integrated data platform.
A key highlight of the partnership is the introduction of a seamless “touchless” passenger journey, from check-in and baggage drop to security screening and boarding, enabled by biometric technologies and real-time data systems.
SITA, which operates in more than 200 countries and territories and serves over 90% of the world’s airlines, will also support flight tracking, fuel optimisation and cockpit data connectivity, while exploring remote check-in services at hotels and resorts within Sun Group’s ecosystem.
The first phase will focus on Phu Quoc International Airport, where SITA’s solutions will be deployed to transform passenger experience. The airport is expected to become one of the first in Southeast Asia to adopt a full self-service model, featuring automated check-in kiosks, self-bag drop systems and self-boarding gates, to streamline procedures and enhance passenger experience.
These upgrades are designed to reduce waiting times, ease congestion and enhance service quality, positioning Phu Quoc as a key international gateway.
Sumesh Patel, president for Asia-Pacific at SITA, said Vietnam is among the fastest-growing aviation markets in the Asia-Pacific, with passenger traffic projected to rise by 8–10% annually over the next decade. He added that the partnership reflects a shared ambition to shape the future of the country’s aviation ecosystem beyond technology, as both sides work to build a modern, region-leading system where airports, airlines and the broader tourism value chain are seamlessly connected.
The agreement builds on Sun Group’s earlier cooperation with Changi Airports International to develop a “destination airport” model, combining operational standards with advanced technology to meet high service demands and accommodate VIP delegations and rising international traffic for APEC 2027.
Vietnam’s choice of Phu Quoc Island as the host venue for APEC 2027 reflects a convergence of strategic factors: modern tourism and aviation infrastructure, proven capacity to host large-scale international events, and a geographically advantageous location within Southeast Asia.
The selection also positions Vietnam to showcase itself as a dynamic, sustainable economy with a strong focus on maritime development. Hosting APEC 2027 is expected to boost investment, accelerate infrastructure upgrades, and stimulate economic growth in the southern region.
