VIP terminal under construction at Phu Quoc airport for APEC 2027
VOV.VN - A VIP terminal is under construction at Phu Quoc International Airport as part of an upgrade and expansion project to serve APEC 2027.
The terminal, expected to serve heads of state and high-level delegations, is designed with inspiration from the ocean and the island’s culture, and is expected to be a key architectural feature of the airport.
The project is part of the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport, with Sun Group as the investor. The VIP terminal will cover about 8,500 sq m and be equipped with modern facilities, with capacity to handle special flights carrying up to 300 passengers.
According to the design, the facility will be used to receive heads of state and senior leaders attending APEC 2027, while also serving future diplomatic events and major activities on the island.
The main design concept draws on the form of the eagle ray, symbolising freedom and endurance. The interior space is conceived as a journey through different layers of the ocean.
The structure is designed as a contemporary work that reflects the identity of Phu Quoc. Elements associated with the island, including white sandy beaches, fish sauce production, pearl farming, pepper cultivation, myrtle wine and coastal fishing life, are incorporated into the design.
These elements are integrated into the interior to provide international visitors with a sense of place from the point of arrival.
The architecture also references traditional Vietnamese communal houses, with sloping roofs, timber structures and detailed partitions, creating a balance between warmth and structural solidity from the reception area.
In the check-in area, the space is organised along a high, straight axis, highlighted by rows of wooden columns that create a formal rhythm. A wave-like lighting system casts soft light onto patterned wooden panels, evoking traditional weaving techniques.
The departure area opens up with large floor-to-ceiling glass panels overlooking the sea. A restrained palette, natural materials and open views create a setting comparable to a seaside resort, where passengers can relax or complete procedures before departure.
The waiting area for senior officials and heads of state continues the ocean theme, featuring a suspended sculpture made of glass and gold, inspired by the image of an eagle ray in motion.
To meet requirements for high-level diplomatic service, the terminal includes dedicated and flexible functional spaces such as meeting rooms, temporary working areas and reception lounges. Interior details are designed to ensure security, comfort and consistency with the overall architectural concept.
With flexible operations serving both international events such as APEC and dedicated charter flights, the VIP terminal at Phu Quoc International Airport is expected to support the island’s position and Vietnam’s image internationally.
