Vietnam seeks Westinghouse cooperation in developing nuclear energy projects
VOV.VN - Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien met with the leadership of Westinghouse Electric Company LLC, a global leader in nuclear energy technology, in Washington D.C. on May 19 to examine cooperation opportunities for nuclear energy projects in Vietnam.

During the working session with Margaret Cosentino, executive vice president of Westinghouse, Dien stated that Vietnam plans to restart its nuclear power programme to ensure energy security amid rising electricity demand and the current limitations of renewable energy.
He emphasised that Vietnam would adopt a cautious, modern, and practical approach, adding the country has multiple potential sites for nuclear development. He said the programme provides a strong basis for cooperation with international partners like Westinghouse on both large-scale and small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear projects.
The Minister also affirmed that energy cooperation would be a key driver in helping balance bilateral trade between the two countries.
For her part, Cosentino expressed strong support for Vietnam’s nuclear energy plans and highlighted the importance of long-term energy collaboration.
Both sides agreed to exchange information and work toward signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Westinghouse and Petrovietnam, focusing on nuclear power development.
The cooperation will include key areas such as infrastructure investment models PPP and BOT, technology transfer, and personnel training for Vietnam’s future nuclear industry.
Minister Dien is leading a Vietnamese delegation to the second round of negotiations on a bilateral reciprocal trade agreement between Vietnam and the United States in Washington D.C. from May 19 - 22.
