Government chief underscores nuclear power for sustainable energy development
VOV.VN - Developing green and sustainable energy is an urgent priority for Vietnam, with nuclear power positioned as a crucial solution to meet both national needs and global trends.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh made this statement during the second meeting of the Steering Committee for Nuclear Power Plant Development in Hanoi on February 2, where progress since the first meeting was reviewed, and a detailed implementation plan for the nuclear project was discussed.
At the event, PM Chinh highlighted that green and sustainable development is a cornerstone of the Party and State’s policy, especially given the country’s increasing vulnerability to climate change impacts such as land subsidence, drought, and saltwater intrusion.
Vietnam, he noted, is aiming for economic growth of at least 8% in 2025 and double-digit expansion in the years that follow. This economic scaling is expected to drive an annual growth in power demand of 12-16%, particularly in emerging sectors like AI, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and big data.
The Government chief stressed that the development of green and sustainable energy, including nuclear power, is an urgent priority. He called for the committee to review the progress made so far and to refine the detailed plan for the nuclear power plant project’s implementation. The plan must deal with key elements such as infrastructure development, resettlement programs, technology transfer, human resources training, investment sources, policy frameworks, and the removal of any obstacles.
Regarding the national significance of nuclear power development, which requires significant investment of effort and intellect, PM Chinh underlined the need to establish specialized working groups. These groups should outline specific requirements, with clear delegation of responsibilities, timelines, and deliverables.
The Prime Minister also accentuated the importance of transparency during the project’s implementation, bidding processes, and review of input projects. He emphasized that everything must be thoroughly examined, with operations conducted transparently, to ensure the common goal and to combat corruption and negative practices.
