Vietnam backs disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s participation in the High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva, Switzerland has reaffirmed its commitment, responsibility, and strong support for the CD.

The High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) took place in Geneva, Switzerland from February 24 to 26, with the participation of United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres, UN General Assembly President Philémon Yang, as well as representatives from member states and CD observers.
Vietnam's delegation to the conference was led by Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and other international organizations in Geneva.
In his speech, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung emphasized Vietnam's consistent stance in supporting all efforts toward nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. He highlighted the CD's crucial role as the only multilateral forum dedicated to global disarmament.
He underscored Vietnam's active participation and contributions to the CD and other disarmament-related agreements. The nation has chaired the CD three times and is a member of all major multilateral agreements on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Notably, Vietnam is a signatory to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), one of the key agreements negotiated within the CD.
Expressing shared concerns with other member states over global security challenges and the ongoing difficulties facing the CD, the Vietnamese diplomat stressed the need to capitalize on recent progress, such as the establishment of working groups to discuss substantive issues. Vietnam called on member states to uphold responsibility and political will, beef up cooperation, engage in substantive and flexible dialogue, and enhance inclusivity within the CD. These efforts, he noted, would help break the longstanding deadlock and advance the CD's multilateral disarmament agenda.
As a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Vietnam supports regional disarmament efforts and the establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones worldwide. In this spirit, Vietnam emphasized the need for the full and effective implementation of the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty. The country reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with nuclear-weapon states to expedite their signing and accession to the SEANWFZ Treaty.
