Central Vietnam welcomes first int’l cruise ships of Lunar New Year 2026
VOV.VN - Central Vietnam’s seaports welcomed the first international cruise ships of the Lunar New Year 2026 on February 19 (the third day of the first lunar month), marking an auspicious start to this year’s cruise tourism season.
The international cruise ship Adora Mediterranea arrived at Chan May Port, Hue city, from Guangzhou, China, carrying 2,613 passengers and 732 crew members. The vessel marked the first international cruise call to Central Vietnam in the early days of the Lunar New Year.
Upon arrival, local authorities and travel agencies coordinated to facilitate swift immigration procedures, ensuring security and safety while enabling passengers to disembark smoothly for shore excursions. Many visitors chose tours highlighting the region’s cultural heritage, cuisine and traditional craft villages.
Le Chi Phai, deputy general director of Chan May Port, said that the ship serves a high-spending segment of travelers. Although their stays are typically short, these passengers tend to use premium services, contributing to growth in transport, hospitality and commercial sectors.
The increasing number of international cruise calls in recent years underscores Central Vietnam’s rising appeal on the regional cruise tourism map.
In 2025, Chan May Port welcomed 46 cruise ships with a total of 131,515 passengers and crew members. In 2026, the number of cruise calls is expected to nearly double to around 88, bringing approximately 260,000 passengers and crew.
Meanwhile, at Tien Sa Port (Da Nang), local authorities in coordination with Da Nang Port JSC and the Border Guard Command welcomed the cruise ship Seabourn Encore, operated by Tan Hong Travel Company.
The vessel carried more than 1,000 passengers, including 580 tourists from the UK, France and the United States, along with around 500 crew members. The ship docked in the morning and departed at 6 p.m. the same day.
To greet the first cruise visitors of the lunar year, Da Nang organised vibrant lion dance performances and presented guests with traditional Tet gifts, including conical hats, festive gift boxes, traditional Tet cakes, offering an introduction to Vietnam’s Lunar New Year culture. During their stay, visitors explored attractions such as the Museum of Cham Sculpture, the Marble Mountains and the UNESCO Cultura Heritage Site of Hoi An.
Throughout the Lunar New Year holiday period, from February 16 to 22, the central city is set to receive several additional international cruise ships. On February 20 (the fourth day of the first lunar month), the city expects around 2,800 visitors from European countries including Italy, France, the UK and Spain. On February 22 (the sixth day of the first lunar month), approximately 650 European tourists are scheduled to arrive for sightseeing and cultural experiences.
