Ho Chi Minh City authorities have proposed a VND9.2 trillion (US$370 million) project to dredge and upgrade the Ba Lon Canal, one of the city’s seven key drainage arteries, as flooding and pollution intensify across southern areas.

As part of its broader urban redevelopment strategy, Ho Chi Minh City is working to relocate nearly 40,000 households living on and along canals by 2030, with almost 3,000 already resettled as of mid-July 2025.

Vietnam has expressed its hope that Cambodia will soon provide information on Cambodia’s Funan-Techo canal project and join hands in assessing its impacts and seeking solutions to them.

The Vietnam National Mekong Committee (VNMC) on April 23 held a consultation workshop on Cambodia’s proposed Funan-Techo canal project which has raised concerns about potential impacts on the Mekong river.

Vietnam is highly interested in the Funan Techo canal project and asks Cambodia to work closely with Vietnam and the International Mekong River Commission to share information and assess the impact of the project on the water resources and ecological environment of the Mekong Delta to ensure the harmonious interests of riparian countries and residents in the area.

Problems and solutions to the slowdown of global transport through the Red Sea were discussed during a meeting among business executives, officials from the Vietnam Maritime Administration and the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) in Hanoi on February 6.
