VOV.VN - The country has been strongly advised to redouble efforts to put an end to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in a bid to have the European Commission (EC)’s ‘yellow card’ removed, thereby boosting aquatic exports to the EU market, according to industry insiders.

Vietnam’s aquatic products have gained the favour of Australian consumers, Secretary of the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment Andrew Metcalfe told a workshop on October 1.

Production and exports of aquatic products have been hard hit by social distancing measures in place for the past two months in 19 southern localities.

The Ministry of Public Security has been asked to seriously punish individuals and organisations working as brokers to bring Vietnamese fishing vessels and fishermen to overseas waters to illegally exploit aquatic resources.

Vietnam’s aquatic export is hoped to hit US$9 billion in 2021 thanks to the recovery of consumption in key markets such as the US, the European Union (EU), and other potential markets.
