Weightlifter Duyen fails to bag medal at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

VOV.VN - Vietnamese weightlifter Hoang Thi Duyen, the last hopeful of Vietnamese sports at Tokyo 2020 Olympics, finished fifth in the women’s 59kg weightlifting category in Tokyo on July 27, failing to secure a medal for Vietnam at the global sport competition.

Duyen lifted a total of 208kg, including 95kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk.

The top position went to Kuo Hsing-chun of Chinese Taipei who won gold after lifting 236kg, breaking her own Olympics record.

Polina Guryeva of Turkmenistan came second after lifting 217kg, whilst Japanese weightlifter Mikiko Andoh was third with 214kg.

Duyen’s failure came as a surprise to spectators as she was anticipated to win a silver medal by AP. Her recent best result was 223kg, trailing behind Kuo Hsing-chun (247kg) and Mikiko Andoh (225).

The Vietnamese athlete, 25, previously won a silver medal at the 2018 World Weightlifting Championships held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

She also clinched a gold at the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines in 2019. Last year saw her bag a gold medal at the 2020 Weightlifting World Cup in Rome, Italy.

Duyen was Vietnam’s last hopeful at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Earlier, other leading athletes Nguyen Thi Tam (boxing), Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting), Thach Kim Tuan (weightlifting), Truong Thi Kim Tuyen (Taekwondo) and pair Luyong Thi Thao/Dinh Thi Hao (rowing) had disappointed spectators, saying farewell to the games.
