Vietnam lose 0-3 to China in AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup opener
VOV.VN - Vietnam suffered a 0-3 defeat to China in their opening match of the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 on April 1, as they were unable to overcome physically and technically superior opponents.
Vietnam made a bright start and nearly took an early lead in the fourth minute when Ngan Thi Thanh Hieu unleashed a dangerous shot, but the Chinese goalkeeper reacted quickly to deny the effort. Following that chance, Vietnam adopted a compact defensive approach, managing to limit China’s attacking threats for much of the first half.
However, sustained pressure from China eventually paid off. In the 40th minute, Zheng Luu capitalised on a scramble inside the penalty area to fire home the opening goal. Just four minutes later, she doubled the lead with a composed finish after breaking through Vietnam’s defence.
China continued to dominate after the break and sealed the result in the 77th minute. From a set-piece delivered from the left flank, Vietnamese defenders failed to clear the ball, allowing Zeng Yujia to score from close range past goalkeeper Le Thi Thu.
Despite the defeat, Vietnam showed determination throughout the match but struggled to match China’s overall quality and physical advantage.
Vietnam will next face Thailand and Bangladesh in the group stage. Under the tournament format, the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.
