U19 Women’s Championship Final: Vietnam and Thailand set for showdown

VOV.VN - Ahead of the final match of the 2025 ASEAN U19 Women’s Championship, scheduled for June 18 evening in Ho Chi Minh City, both head coaches of the Vietnamese and Thai teams expressed mutual respect and caution, saying the final would be a high-level contest with equal chances for both sides.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference on June 17, head coach of Vietnam U19 women’s team Okiyama Masahiko affirmed his team’s readiness, while acknowledging the strength of Thailand, the defending champions.

“They are very strong…… They have many quality attackers, with around five or six players capable of playing at the senior national level,” remarked Masahiko.

Addressing concerns that Vietnam’s defence has yet to face major challenges since the start of the tournament, he noted that the group stage and knockout rounds are completely different.

“We’ve made necessary adjustments in our defensive line during the final training session and reminded the players, especially the goalkeeper, to stay focused. Our past matches against men’s teams have also provided valuable experience. We hope to keep a clean sheet in the final,” he said.

Knowing that Vietnam have twice lost to Thailand in previous finals, Masahiko felt confidence that “This year, our goal remains the same that is to win the championship. We will give it our all to deliver an exciting match for the fans, regardless of the result.”

On the Thai side, head coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian praised the host nation, describing Vietnam as a strong, well-organised team with standout players such as Hoang Van and Thanh Hieu. She revealed that Thailand have studied their opponents carefully and would prepare appropriate defensive strategies.

Srathongvian also acknowledged that Vietnam’s defence poses a significant challenge, noting that their defenders play with great solidity and create a strong wall in front of goal. While Srathongvian refrained from making a prediction, she emphasised that in football, timing is crucial, and that both teams have an equal chance of winning.

The 2025 ASEAN U19 Women’s Championship final between Vietnam and Thailand is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 PM on June 18 at Thong Nhat Stadium, Ho Chi Minh City. This match is not only a clash between the two strongest teams in the region but also a golden opportunity for Vietnam’s youth women football to finally realise their championship dream after several misses.
