Local badminton players secure Tokyo Olympics berth
VOV.VN - Tien Minh and Thuy Linh have become Vietnam’s ninth and tenth athletes to qualify for the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics following the cancellation of numerous international badminton tournaments caused by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced that three tournaments serving as Olympics qualifiers, namely the India Open, the Malaysia Open, and the Singapore Open have all been cancelled due to the global spread of COVID-19.
As a result of this schedule change, the current positions remain unchanged in the latest world badminton rankings.
The final list of individuals who have qualified for the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be unveiled on June 15. As there are no upcoming international tournaments it is easy to anticipate who will make the list, unless unexpected events occur such as injuries or changes in the competition’s format.
In the men’s singles category, Nguyen Tien Minh is currently ranked 32nd in the race to qualify for the Olympics.
There will be a total of 40 players who will compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, therefore the Vietnamese badminton player is highly likely to win a ticket to compete at the event.
