Local rowers qualify for place in 2021 Tokyo Olympics
VOV.VN - Vietnamese rowers Luong Thi Thao and Dinh Thi Hao successfully qualified for the upcoming 2021 Tokyo Olympics after finishing second in the World Rowing Asia and Oceania Olympic qualification regatta, with the event reaching its conclusion on May 7 in Japan.
In the women’s lightweight category, the pair faced stiff competition from the athletes from Japan. During the event they showed weakness during the final 250-metre distance and subsequently finished in second place behind Japan with a time of seven minutes and 17 seconds.
At the event the top three finalists, including the Vietnamese rowers, did enough to earn a place at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
In the women’s double sculls, Pham Thi Hue came in fourth with a time of seven minutes and 58 seconds. She did well enough to finish among the leading five, although each country is only allowed one slot in the rowing event, therefore she is not permitted to compete further as Vietnamese athletes had already won an Olympic slot in the women’s lightweight.
In the men’s double sculls, Nguyen Van Hieu finished in sixth in Group A with a time of minutes and 34 seconds, thereby failing to win any Olympic ticket.
So far the nation has earned seven places for the upcoming Olympics, including Phuong Thanh and Thanh Tung in gymnastics, Huy Hoang in swimming, Nguyen Van Duong in boxing, local pair Phi Vu and Anh Nguyet in archery, along with Luong Thi Thao and Dinh Thi Hao in rowing.
