Kim Sang-sik calls up three overseas Vietnamese goalkeepers for Malaysia clash
VOV.VN - Three overseas Vietnamese goalkeepers have been called up to the Vietnam national football team as preparations begin for the upcoming clash with Malaysia in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification.
Vietnam are set to face Malaysia on March 31 at Thien Truong Stadium in Ninh Binh province in the final Group F match of the qualification round.
In preparation for the match, head coach Kim Sang-sik has been closely monitoring domestic competitions in recent weeks to select players for the national squad.
He recently decided to call up Nguyen Filip (Hanoi Police FC), Patrik Le Giang (Ho Chi Minh City Police FC) and Dang Van Lam (Ninh Binh FC) for training ahead of the decisive clash.
All the three goalkeepers were developed in European football academies and have spent several seasons playing in Vietnam. They are key players at clubs near the top of the current V.League 1 standings and are widely respected by football experts.
Their presence has created one of the most intense yet exciting goalkeeper competitions in the history of the Vietnamese national team, giving the coach a pleasant headache when choosing the starting goalkeeper against Malaysia.
Several clubs also confirmed the players called up to the national team. Hanoi Police FC has the largest number of players selected, with eight names including Nguyen Filip, Nguyen Quang Hai, Cao Pendant Quang Vinh, Bui Hoang Viet Anh, Doan Van Hau, Le Van Do, and Le Pham Thanh Long.
Ninh Binh FC contributes five players, including Dang Van Lam, Nguyen Hoang Duc, Nguyen Duc Chien, Truong Tien Anh, and Le Bao Ngoc.
Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City Police FC has three players selected - Patrik Le Giang, Nguyen Tien Linh, and Dinh Thanh Binh.
Players from The Cong Viettel FC and Nam Dinh FC have also been included in the preliminary list.
Most players will join the national team after Round 16 of the V.League concludes on March 15. Those from Cong An Ha Noi FC and Da Nang FC will join later after completing their rescheduled Round 13 match on March 22.
Depending on tactical requirements and player fitness, coach Kim Sang-sik may adjust the final squad list ahead of the crucial match against Malaysia.
