Advantage for Vietnam ahead of Women’s Asian Cup match against Chinese Taipei
VOV.VN - Vietnam head into a decisive group match against Chinese Taipei with a clear advantage in the race for a quarterfinal spot at the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup that is taking place in Australia.
Vietnam will play their second Group C match against Chinese Taipei on March 7, and prior to the match, the team led by head coach Mai Duc Chung received encouraging news as results from other groups have created a favourable scenario for the Southeast Asian side.
Under the tournament format, the 12 participating teams are divided into three groups of four. The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals, along with the two best third-placed teams. Quarterfinal winners will move on to the semifinals, while the losing teams will compete in a play-off round.
With this format in place, Vietnam could still secure a quarterfinal berth as long as they finish third in Group C with a better record than at least one third-placed team from another group.
Following the second round of matches in Group A, either the Philippines or Iran will end the group stage in third place. However, both teams currently have zero points and can collect a maximum of three points by the end of the group stage.
Meanwhile, Vietnam already have three points after defeating India in their opening match. Therefore, even a draw against Chinese Taipei would ensure that Mai Duc Chung’s side remain among the top three teams in Group C with a better tally than the third-placed team in Group A.
In that scenario, Vietnam would virtually secure a place in the quarterfinals without needing to rely on the outcome of their final group match against Japan.
The Group C clash between Vietnam and Chinese Taipei is scheduled to kick off at 12:00 pm on March 7.
