Vietnam recalls three batches of infant formula over bacterial toxin risk
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Food Safety Authority has issued a warning and initiated a recall of three batches of infant formula due to contamination with a bacterial toxin.
The affected products are a2 Platinum Premium infant formula for children aged 0-12 months, which were found to contain cereulide - a heat-stable toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus that can pose health risks to infants.
The move follows a notification on May 2 by the US Food and Drug Administration, stating that the a2 Milk Company (a2MC) had voluntarily recalled the affected products in the United States.
The recalled batches, sold in 31.7-ounce cans, are batch 2210269454 (expiry: July 15, 2026); batch 2210324609 (expiry: January 21, 2027); and batch 2210321712 (expiry: January 15, 2027).
Vietnamese authorities have instructed local health departments nationwide to review product registrations and distribution of the affected infant formula.
Companies responsible for distributing the product in Vietnam, if any, are required to notify retailers and consumers to immediately stop using the products and carry out recall procedures in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. They must also report quantities imported, sold, and remaining in stock, along with proposed handling measures.
Competent agencies are also developing plans to conduct market surveillance sampling, particularly focusing on milk and nutritional products for infants, to promptly detect and remove any substandard products.
Consumers have been urged not to use any of the affected batches. The Ministry of Industry and Trade has been requested to coordinate with e-commerce platforms to halt sales of the recalled products and remove related listings if they are found to be circulating in Vietnam.
