In a statement released late on January 8, the company said the recall applies to specific batches of NAN products imported directly by Nestlé Vietnam, identified by batch numbers and expiration dates.

On its website, the company published a detailed list of the 17 affected products, including product names, batch numbers and expiration dates. However, it did not disclose specific details on how the recall would be carried out or whether refunds would be offered to consumers.

Nestlé Vietnam noted that NAN infant formula is available in the local market through multiple channels, including official importers, parallel imports and products of unknown origin. The current recall, it said, only covers the 17 batches imported and distributed by Nestlé Vietnam itself.

The company emphasiaed that other Nestlé products sold in Vietnam, including NAN OptiproPlus (Stages 3 and 4), NAN SupremePro, S-26 Ultima, PreNAN, NAN ExpertPro Lactose Free, NAN ExpertPro Total Comfort, Nutren Junior and Peptamen Junior, are not affected and remain safe for consumption.

According to Nestlé Vietnam, the recall stems from routine quality checks that identified a potential issue with a raw material - arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, part of polyunsaturated fatty acids PUFA - supplied by a third-party vendor. The oil may contain trace amounts of cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus, which was used in the manufacture of certain infant formula products produced in Europe.

The company said that while the amount of oil used in the affected products is minimal and there is no evidence confirming the presence of cereulide in the recalled batches in Vietnam, Nestlé decided to proceed with a voluntary recall based on a maximum precaution principle.

The announcement comes after the Ministry of Health on January 7 ordered a temporary halt to the sale and removal of online listings for Nestlé Beba and Alfamino infant formula products due to concerns over possible toxin contamination. The food safety watchdog also urged the Ministry of Industry and Trade to tighten inspections and take action against the online sale of the products.

In response, Nestlé Vietnam said it has never imported, registered or distributed Beba or Alfamino products in the Vietnamese market through any official channel.

Globally, Nestlé has expanded a recall of infant and follow-on formula products to more than 50 countries after detecting potential cereulide contamination linked to raw materials from a supplier. The recall affects markets across multiple regions, including Australia, China, France, Spain, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. Initial recalls began on a limited scale in December 2025 before being broadened this month following additional safety tests.
