Vietnam reburies remains of 30 fallen soldiers repatriated from Cambodia
VOV.VN - Dong Nai province in southern Vietnam on December 20 held a solemn memorial and reburial ceremony for the remains of 41 fallen soldiers, including 31 who died during wartime in Cambodia.
Addressing the ceremony, Le Truong Son, Vice Chairman of the Dong Nai provincial People’s Committee, said that since 2002, the provincial military’s remains recovery team (Team K72) has conducted extensive search across thousands of sites, overcoming difficult terrain and conditions to locate and repatriate fallen soldiers.
Over the past two decades, the team has recovered a total of 3,953 sets of remains of Vietnamese soldiers who died during various phases of the war, both within Vietnam and in Cambodia, and reburied them with full military honours at martyrs’ cemeteries.
Since September 2025 alone, Team K72 has located and recovered 41 sets of remains. Of these, five were found in Loc Ninh commune, six in Loc Tan commune, and 30 in Cambodia.
According to provincial authorities, the identities and hometowns of all 41 soldiers have not yet been determined. However, biological samples from 10 sets of remains are suitable for DNA testing and will be sent for analysis. The testing will be conducted in coordination with Vietnam’s nationwide DNA collection programme for relatives of unidentified war dead, in the hope of eventually identifying the fallen soldiers and reuniting them with their families.
At the ceremony, provincial leaders, military officers and representatives of mass organisations laid wreaths and offered incense in tribute, honouring the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for national independence and freedom.
Following the memorial service, the remains were formally laid to rest in a solemn burial ritual, marking another step in Vietnam’s ongoing humanitarian effort to account for those who went missing during decades of conflict.
