Vietnam cracks down on major drug trafficking ring
Ten people have been arrested and more than 200kg of drugs seized after police busted a gang smuggling narcotics from Cambodia and Laos to Vietnam.
The Drug Crime Investigation Police Department (C04) under the Ministry of Public Security said on December 20 that the ring leader was Ly Thanh Huu, 40, from Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City.
Documents and other items relating to the smuggling operation were also seized.
Police say Huu has changed his smuggling routes many times to evade the authorities.
At the end of August 2024, the police received information that the smugglers would transport drugs across the border on a passenger bus on the Dien Chau (the central province of Nghe An) - Son Tay (Hanoi) route and would deliver five sacks of drugs at the My Dinh National Stadium.
The police arrested bus attendant Ho Quang Nhan, 25, and Quan Trong Cao and Ly Van Huy, 22, both from Nghe An province.
Cao confessed that in addition to the drugs discovered, he also sent three cardboard boxes containing drugs to his neighbour's residence in Minh Khai, Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi.
Based on the men’s confessions, the police extended the investigation and dismantled the mass ring including one of the leaders with Lao nationality.
