Vietnam and Cambodia boost war martyrs’ search and repatriation efforts

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Cambodia have agreed to continue promoting cooperation in searching and repatriating the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who sacrificed in Cambodia during various wartime periods.

The agreement was reached during a review meeting on the search and repatriation work in Ho Chi Minh City on September 26.

Both sides highly appreciated the achievements made so far, notably that during the 2024-2025 dry season, Vietnamese recovery teams successfully searched for and repatriated 781 sets of remains.

Although information about burial sites is becoming increasingly scarce, the search and recovery efforts have been effectively implemented thanks to close coordination among agencies and authorities of both countries, with strong support from Cambodia in mobilising local people to provide information on the burial locations of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts.

At the meeting, both sides agreed to maintain 11 Vietnamese recovery teams in various provinces and cities of Cambodia during the 2025-2026 dry season. They also consented to enhance communications and encourage local people to provide information regarding martyrs and burial sites.

Furthermore, both sides stressed the need to strengthen cooperation, exchange experience, and direct permanent agencies to thoroughly review, collect, and verify information to improve the effectiveness of the work.

In addition, the two sides agreed to continue constructing, repairing, and restoring the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monuments in Cambodia to contribute to memorial efforts and deepen the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.

The meeting concluded with the signing of the 24th Meeting’s minutes, serving as the basis for coordinated activities in the near future.

The meeting was co-chaired by Lieutenant General Vo Minh Luong, Deputy Minister of National Defence of Vietnam, and General Pol Saroeun, Senior Advisor to the King of Cambodia.
