Tropical depression unlikely to strengthen into storm, heavy rain expected

VOV.VN - A tropical depression that formed in the East Sea on June 24 is unlikely to intensify into a storm, but it is expected to bring heavy rain to regions of Vietnam, especialy in the south.

At 1:00 A.M. on June 25, the tropical depression was located approximately 440km east of the Paracel Islands, packing winds of between 39 - 49kmh near its centre, reported the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Latest forecasts indicate that the tropical depression will maintain a steady northwestward movement toward China’s Leizhou Peninsula before moving further inland, gradually weakening and dissipating.

Although the tropical depression is not expected to directly affect Vietnam’s mainland, meteorologists said, it is intensifying the southwest monsoon. As a result, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the evening and night of June 25 across areas from Da Nang to Binh Thuan, with heavy rainfall ranging from 10 - 30mm, and some places exceeding 80mm.

In the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam, moderate to heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms are forecast in the afternoon and evening, with downpours reaching 15 - 40mm, and some areas receiving over 100mm.

In the North, heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms occurred overnight and into the early morning of June 25. Rainfall measured from 7:00 P.M. on June 24 to 3:00 A.M. on June 25 exceeded 130mm in some locations, such as 233mm in Lieu Do (Yen Bai) and 193.4mm in Tien Nguyen (Ha Giang).

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are anticipated to continue in the Northwest region on June 25.

Meteorologists warned thunderstorms may bring tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusty winds. Intense rainfall in several areas may cause flash floods in small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes, and flooding in low-lying areas.

To proactively respond to the tropical depression, the Minister of Agriculture and Environment has issued an urgent directive requesting relevant ministries, agencies, and chairpersons of People’s Committees in coastal provinces and cities from Quang Ninh to Phu Yen to take precautionary measures.

Authorities are instructed to monitor, count, and notify vessel owners currently operating at sea about the depression’s position, movement direction, and developments so they can take preventive actions.

At the same time, localities must prepare rescue forces and equipment, ensuring readiness for search and rescue operations if needed.
