Heavy rain poses high risk of flash floods, landslides in Northern Vietnam

VOV.VN - Localities in Northern Vietnam are experiencing heavy rain, posing a high risk of flashfloods and landslides, especially in mountainous areas, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

From 4:00 PM on June 22 to 3:00 AM on June 23, many areas recorded more than 100mm of rain, including Bang Coc commune of Tuyen Quang province (140.2mm), My Luong commune of Phu Tho province (126.6mm), Cam Nhan commune of Yen Bai province (117.8mm), and Ngan village of Ha Giang province (105.2mm).

The northern mountainous and midland localities are forecast to continue to see moderate to heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing very heavy rain on June 23.

Rainfall amounts are expected to range from 20 - 40mm, with some places receiving over 100mm. The heaviest rainfall is likely to occur in the late afternoon and night.

Due to the recent rainfall, the lower sections of the Cau River and Thuong River will continue to rise, reaching alert levels 1–2, before gradually receding. There is a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas along rivers.

Notably, a Santa Fe SUV carrying five family members was swept away by floodwaters in Thai Sơn commune of Tuyen Quang province on June 22.

Fortunately, a young child returning home from buying late-night food happened to hear cries for help from inside the vehicle and quickly ran to alert local residents. All five family members were rescued safely by locals, and the vehicle is scheduled to be towed out on June 23.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported, continuous heavy rain has caused soil moisture models to indicate that some areas in the northern mountainous and midland provinces are nearly saturated or have already reached full saturation.

Meteorologists warn about a high risk of flash floods and landslides in 11 northern provinces, namely Lai Chau, Son La, Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, and Bac Giang.
