Three Chinese nationals imprisoned for murdering taxi driver in Vietnam
VOV.VN - The People’s Court of Quang Ngai province, central Vietnam, has sentenced three Chinese nationals to a combined 43 years in prison on charges of “Murder” and “Robbery” under Article 168 of the Penal Code.

According to the indictment, on July 26, 2024, Huang Jie Cheng (19), Luo Shen Jun (17), and Gan Ying (18) illegally entered Vietnam through Quang Ninh province with the help of a man known only as A Yang. In the early hours of July 27, the group hired a taxi driven by N.V.H., a 48-year-old man from Ha Long City, Quang Ninh province, to travel south.
Along the way, the Chinese group suspected that the taxi’s route would lead them to Cambodia. They then conspired to overpower the driver, seize the vehicle, and return north. Their plan was to strangle the driver with a piece of clothing and strike him with a power bank to render him unconscious.
On the evening of July 27, while the taxi stopped for dinner in Mo Duc district, Quang Ngai province, the group assigned tasks to each member. Around 7 p.m., after the driver refueled and pulled out of a gas station, they attacked him as planned. The victim lost consciousness, after which Huang drove the car to a deserted stretch of road and pushed the driver onto the street, causing his death.
The three continued driving north, discarding the victim’s two mobile phones to avoid location tracking and taking more than VND3.5 million (approx. US$140) and 100 yuan in cash. When they reached Quang Binh province, traffic police ordered the vehicle to stop for inspection. The individuals ignored the order and attempted to flee but were subdued and arrested shortly afterward.
At trial, the court determined that the defendants committed the crimes in an organised and particularly serious manner. However, taking into account their status as minors at the time and certain mitigating factors, the court sentenced Huang Jie Cheng to 19 years in prison (12 years for Murder, 7 years for Robbery); Luo Shen Jun to 13 years in prison (9 years for Murder, 4 years for Robbery); and Gan Ying to 11 years in prison (8 years for Murder, 3 years for Robbery).
In total, the three defendants must serve 43 years in prison.
