Ragasa loses intensity, set to make landfall on September 25
VOV.VN - Super Typhoon Ragasa has weakened after several hours of intense activity over the East Sea but remains a powerful storm and is expected to make landfall along the northern coastal provinces of Vietnam on September 25.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 7 a.m. on September 24, Ragasa was located about 620km east of Mong Cai ward, Quang Ninh province, packing winds of 167–183kph near its centre with gusts exceeding more than 200kph. Ragasa was moving west-northwest at approximately 20kmh.
By 4 a.m. on September 25, Ragasa will be near the coastal area of China’s Guangxi province, about 150 km east of Mong Cai ward, with its intensity further weakening. The storm continues moving mainly west-northwest at 20-25kmh and is gradually weakening into a tropical depression. It is likely to make landfall in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong on the morning of September 25.
Meteorological agencies forecast heavy rainfall from the night of September 24 through the night of September 26 in Northern Vietnam, as well as localities from Thanh Hoa to Nghe An in the central region. Rainfall amounts will generally range from 100 to 250mm, with some areas receiving over 400mm.
Authorities warned of potential urban flooding caused by intense rain, as well as flooding in low-lying and vulnerable areas, flashfloods on small rivers and streams, and landslides on steep slopes.
Hoang Duc Cuong, deputy director of the Meteorological and Hydrological Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said that global meteorological agencies currently rate Ragasa as the strongest super typhoon worldwide in 2025, surpassing Hurricane Erin in 2025 and super typhoon Yagi in 2024.
Since the afternoon of September 23, Ragasa has steadily been downgraded and continues to decrease in strength as it approaches the coast of China’s Guangdong province.
The interaction with land terrain and the dry airflow from a cold front moving south from the north has caused Ragasa’s intensity to drop quickly.
In another development, a tropical depression strengthened into a storm over the waters of the Philippines on September 23. Bualoi is anticipated to move into the East Sea on September 26, becoming the 10th storm in the regional waters this storm season.
