Over 12,000 Vietnamese citizens in Middle East safe amid regional tensions
VOV.VN - More than 12,000 Vietnamese citizens currently living, studying and working in the Middle East remain safe and stable, with no reports of anyone affected by ongoing regional conflicts, the Foreign Ministry said on March 5.
At a regular press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said Vietnamese representative missions in the Middle East have been closely monitoring developments in the region and maintaining regular contact with the Vietnamese community.
“So far, the situation of Vietnamese citizens in the region remains generally stable and there have been no reports of Vietnamese nationals being affected by the conflicts,” Hang said.
According to the spokesperson, under the close direction of Party and State leaders, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has coordinated with relevant agencies and Vietnamese missions in Iran, Israel and neighbouring countries to track the situation and support Vietnamese citizens when necessary.
Vietnamese diplomatic missions have also worked with local authorities to assist citizens, including tourists in transit and official delegations whose flights were disrupted due to airspace closures in the region.
The ministry has issued safety advisories and provided emergency contact channels for Vietnamese citizens, while preparing contingency plans for possible evacuation if the situation deteriorates.
Responding to another question regarding maritime safety, Hang said authorities are also monitoring the situation of Vietnamese seafarers operating near regional conflict hotspots.
According to Vietnam’s Maritime and Waterway Administration (VIMAWA), eight ships with about 160 Vietnamese crew members are currently operating in waters close to areas affected by tensions in the Middle East.
Given the potential risks to maritime safety and security, VIMAWA has issued notices to ship owners, shipping associations and crewing companies, urging them to regularly update information on regional developments and take preventive measures to ensure the safety of vessels and crew members.
Hang emphasised that Vietnamese representative missions in the region are on standby and will coordinate closely with domestic agencies to provide timely consular protection if any Vietnamese citizens or vessels encounter difficulties.
