North–South express train crashes into container truck, driver killed

VOV.VN - A North–South express passenger train collided with a container truck trapped on a railway crossing in Hanoi on the evening of February 25, killing the truck driver and injuring another person.

The accident happened at approximately 7:51 p.m. when a North–South express train traveling from north to south crashed into a truck hauling a container at an automatic railway crossing in Ngoc Hoi commune, Hanoi.

According to initial reports, the truck was attempting to cross the railway when the automatic barrier system was activated and lowered. The vehicle became stuck on the tracks just as the train approached, resulting in a direct and forceful collision.

The impact dragged both the train and the truck nearly 50 meters along the tracks.

At the scene, the container was torn apart and its steel frame severely twisted. The truck cabin was completely crushed. The locomotive’s front section was also heavily damaged, with metal debris and broken barriers scattered along the railway.

The median strip separating the railway from National Route 1A, one of Vietnam’s main north–south highways, was tilted and damaged. Traffic in the area experienced significant congestion following the crash.

A passenger on board the train said a loud explosion-like noise was heard at the moment of impact, startling many passengers. However, the train cars did not derail or overturn.

Rescue forces arrived shortly after the accident and used specialied equipment to cut open the truck’s cabin. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person in the truck was injured and transported to hospital for emergency treatment.

According to Vietnam Railways Corporation, all passengers and train crew members were unharmed.

Train services through the area were temporarily suspended to facilitate investigation and track clearance, causing disruptions to railway operations. Road traffic along National Route 1A was also affected.

At the time of the accident, Hanoi was experiencing heavy rainfall, creating slippery road conditions and reduced visibility, which may have contributed to the incident.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision.
