Sharp drop in traffic accidents on Day 4 of Lunar New Year

VOV.VN - About 30 traffic accidents were recorded across Vietnam on February 20, the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, leaving 17 people dead and 27 injured, according to the Traffic Police Department.

Compared with the same day of the holiday period in 2025, the number of accidents fell by 18 cases (down 37.5%), fatalities decreased by 13 (down 43.33%), and injuries dropped by two (down 6.9%).

Authorities temporarily impounded 63 cars, 3,565 motorcycles and 115 other vehicles. A total of 346 driving licences were suspended, while 2,105 drivers had penalty points deducted.

Major violations included drink-driving (3,473 cases), speeding (1,597), overloading passengers (27), using mobile phones while driving (20), and drug-related offences (three).

Along National Highway 1A, traffic police units deployed 132 patrol teams inspecting 7,761 vehicles and penalising 1,023 violations.

Authorities noted that traffic conditions on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year were generally stable, with accidents declining across all three criteria (numbers of cases, fatalities and injuries). No serious congestion was reported in major cities or on key transport corridors.

Traffic police forces continue to maintain patrols and inspections to ensure road safety during the post-holiday travel peak.

In Hanoi and surrounding areas, traffic order and safety were maintained without prolonged congestion. On major gateways and expressways such as Phap Van–Cau Gie, Hanoi–Lao Cai, the elevated Ring Road 3 and National Highway 1, vehicle flow remained steady.

In Ho Chi Minh City and neighbouring provinces, traffic on the Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thanh–Dau Giay and Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong–My Thuan expressways stayed normal, with no congestion reported.
