Traffic accidents drop nearly 29% during Lunar New Year 2026

VOV.VN - Traffic accidents across Vietnam fell sharply during the nine-day Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, with fatalities and injuries also declining significantly compared with the same period last year, according to the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.

Statistics show 381 traffic accidents were recorded nationwide from February 14 to 22, resulting in 230 deaths and 274 injuries.

Compared with the Tet holiday in 2025, accidents decreased by 154 cases, or 28.7%, while fatalities fell by 73 or 23.2% and injuries dropped by 118 or 30.1%.

Road traffic accidents accounted for 378 of the total cases, leaving 224 people dead and 274 injured. Year-on-year road accidents declined by 152 cases (28.68%), with fatalities down 25.33% and injuries down 29.92%.

Only a railway incident was reported, resulting in one death, down two cases from a year earlier.

Traffic police handled 76,374 violations nationwide, revoking 2,473 driving licenses, deducting points in 16,095 cases and impounding more than 28,000 vehicles.

Notably, 26,337 drunk driving violations were recorded, accounting for 34.4% of all cases. This marked an increase of 9,188 violations, or 53.5%, compared with the previous Tet holiday.

On average, between 2,500 and 3,000 alcohol-related driving violations were detected each day. Enforcement began nationwide from the morning of the first day of Tet, with authorities emphasising a “no exceptions” approach during the holiday period.

Officials attributed the decline in traffic accidents to the early rollout of a comprehensive safety plan aligned with the national holiday schedule. Traffic police launched peak enforcement two days before and after the holiday.

Particular attention was paid to alcohol violations, speeding, and overloaded passenger buses. In one extreme case, authorities detected a bus carrying more than 100 passengers despite being licensed for only 45 seats.

In addition, AI-powered traffic cameras played a key role this year in monitoring vehicle flows and detecting violations in real time.Traffic police also received public reports via hotlines, social media platforms and the VNeTraffic mobile application, enabling rapid verification and response.

To prevent congestion, officials analysed daily traffic volumes at major city gateways and deployed flexible traffic diversion plans to reduce pressure on highways and national roads.
