Traffic fatalities rise on Day 3 of Lunar New Year of the Horse
VOV.VN - A total of 47 traffic accidents were recorded nationwide on February 19, the third day of the Lunar New Year, resulting in 35 fatalities and 31 injuries, according to the Traffic Police Department.
All the accidents occurred on roads. Compared with the same day in 2025, the number of accidents decreased by seven cases, fatalities increased by six, and injuries fell by 15. No accidents were reported on railway or inland waterway routes.
Traffic police units nationwide inspected and handled more than 7,000 traffic violations on the day. They temporarily impounded 3,475 automobiles and 3,475 motorcycles, revoked 325 driving licences, and deducted licence points in 1,892 cases. Of these violations, 4,268 involved alcohol-related offences, and three cases involved drug use.
From February 14 to 19, a total of 271 traffic accidents were documented nationwide, leaving 168 people dead and 177 injured. Compared with the first six days of the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, the figures declined across all three indicators - numbers of accidents, fatalities and injuries. Of the total, road accidents accounted for 270 cases, resulting in 167 deaths and 177 injuries.
During the six-day period, traffic police nationwide detected and handled more than 48,000 violations. They temporarily impounded 482 automobiles and 17,214 motorcycles, revoked 1,515 driving licences, and deducted licence points in 9,685 cases. Alcohol-related violations accounted for over 16,000 cases, speeding violations for 9,720 cases, and drug-related offences for 24 cases.
The Traffic Police Department stated that during the final three days of the Lunar New Year holiday this year, enforcement efforts would focus on passenger transport vehicles. Key violations targeted include overloading passengers, carrying goods in passenger compartments or on vehicle roofs, exceeding weight and size limits, and speeding.
The department emphasised that strict measures would be applied to all violations, and called on the public to report passenger transport violations via its official channels, including its Facebook page, the VNeTraffic mobile application, and the department’s hotline, in order to ensure road safety during post-holiday travel.
