Heavy rain lashes central Vietnam, meteorologists warn about flash floods

VOV.VN - Localities in the central and Central Highland regions of Vietnam have experienced unusually heavy rain over the past few days, prompting meteorologists to warn about a possibility of flash floods and landslides to hit the regions.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, localities from Hue city to Ninh Thuan province and some Central highland provinces endured heavy rain and thunderstorms in the past 24 hours.

Statistics show Hue received 81.2mm of rain, Da Nang city 159mm, Quang Ngai province 79mm, Phu Yen province 122.4mm, Khanh Hoa province 54.4mm, Dak Lak province 88.6mm, and Kon Tum 58.4mm.

Rain is expected to continue to fall on February 24-25 and there is a risk of flash floods in small rivers and streams and landslides on slopes in those localities, especially in Da Nang city, Phu Yen province, and Dak Lak province, said meteorologists.

On February 23, many residents of Phu Yen province were surprised to witness flooding in the middle of the dry season. Prolonged heavy rain throughout the day caused several streets in Tuy Hoa city to be submerged. Some neighboring districts were also affected as water levels in the Ban Thach River rose above alert level 2.

Meteorologists said due to the influence of an intensifying cold air mass combined with the windward terrain of the Truong Son mountain range, localities from Hue city to Binh Thuan province experienced heavy rain on February 23, and rain would continue to lash the regions on February 24-25.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Huy, an expert in climate change and disaster warning, stated that abnormal weather patterns led to the unseasonal heavy rain and flooding in Phu Yen in mid-February. While unusual, this event had been forecast in advance.

Meteorological experts have warned that flash floods and landslides may have negative impacts on the environment, pose a threat to people’s lives, cause localized traffic congestion affecting vehicle movement, and destroy residential and economic infrastructure, resulting in damage to production activities and socio-economic development.

Residents are advised to closely monitor weather forecasts and official warnings, avoid traveling to high-risk areas prone to flash floods and landslides, and implement measures to prevent flooding and protect personal property.
