Grand requiem held for 39 victims of Ha Long Bay tourist boat tragedy
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Quang Ninh province, in coordination with local authorities and the families of the victims, held a solemn requiem on July 28 for 39 people who lost their lives in the recent tragic capsizing of the Vinh Xanh 58 (Wonder Sea) tourist boat on Ha Long Bay.
The day-long ceremony included traditional Buddhist rites such as soul-inviting rituals, offering of sacred meals, recitation of sutras, and a lantern-release ceremony on the bay to honour the dead.
According to local Buddhist dignitaries, the requiem was not only for the 39 victims of the boat tragedy but also for all lives lost to maritime disasters on Ha Long Bay over the years. The event served as a deeply spiritual and cultural gesture, promoting compassion, remembrance, and healing.
The tourist boat capsized during a sudden thunderstorm on Ha Long Bay on July 19, leaving 39 dead out of 49 people onboard. Only 10 were rescued.
A search campaign was launched, and all the dead bodies had been recovered by search and rescue forces after seven days.
The tragic incident has exposed significant loopholes in early warning systems and the management of inland waterway tourism in the region.
An investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.
