Flash floods and landslides warning for northern and northcentral Vietnam
VOV.VN - Spells of torrential rain currently battering northern and northcentral Vietnamese provinces are forecast to continue to linger over the next few days, posing a high risk of flash floods and landslides in these localities, warned meteorologists.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from 5:00a.m. on September 22 to 5:00a.m. on September 23, northern midland and mountainous localities such as Dien Bien, Son La, Hoa Binh, and Lao Cai, as well as those from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien Hue in the central region, experienced heavy downpours with rainfall measuring between 85.8 mm and 231.8 mm.
The centre warned that flash floods may occur near rivers and streams, as well as a risk of landslides on steep slopes in several areas over the coming hours.
As flash floods and landslides can threaten lives, disrupt traffic, and destroy facilities, people have therefore been advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor weather updates from official sources.
Meanwhile, Thanh Hoa province on September 23 issued a notice about flood alert level 2 on three major rivers - the Ma, Len, and Buoi.
Rising water floods have over the past days caused severe damage to thousands of hectares of rice and crops, and hundreds of hectares of aquaculture areas. Many sections of national highways, provincial roads, and construction works have been eroded and cracked.
A landslide hit a dormitory of Trung Ly Secondary School in Muong Lat district on September 22 evening, forcing 214 students to move to safe locations.
In the central province of Nghe An, heavy rains have caused water levels to rise, flooding many roads around Vinh city.
Localities in the northern and northcentral regions are intensifying efforts to deal with the subsequent floods and landslides caused by heavy downpours.
