High risk of flash floods, landslides as another storm heads towards central region
VOV.VN - There is a high risk of flash floods and landslides occuring in the coastal areas of localities from Nghe An to Quang Nam as a tropical depression strengthened into a storm on September 19 to become the fourth storm to hit the East Sea this year, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Assoc. Prof., Dr. Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that at 7:00 a.m the eye of the storm was located at about 160km northeast of Da Nang and situated roughly 165km east northeast of Quang Tri, with the strongest winds near its centre reaching between 62km and 74km per hour.
At 4:00 p.m, the storm will be situated in the coastal waters from Quang Tri to Quang Nam with wind speeds reaching level eight and gusts of level 10.
The affected areas include the western sea area of the East Sea, including the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago and the coastal areas from Nghe An to Quang Ngai, including Ly Son island, Cu Lao Cham, Con Co, and Hon Ngu, as well as the mainland area from Ha Tinh to Quang Nam.
By 4:00 a.m on September 20, the storm will then gradually weaken into a low-pressure area in central Laos.
Earlier on September 18, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh issued an official dispatch to request that localities closely monitor the developments of the tropical depression that have developed into storm No 4.
The PM therefore urged all affected localities to vigilantly monitor the situation and take drastic measures aimed at safeguarding vessels, marine activities, ensure the safety of people's lives, and limit property damage.
He called for the deployment of proper response plans to mitigate the impact of the storm, severe flooding, landslides, and flash floods.
Hydroelectric and irrigation reservoirs have therefore been requested to effectively manage and alleviate downstream flooding whilst preventing consecutive deluges.
